As part of the Choreographic Convention at Moving in November 2026, Vincent Roumagnac will offer a twofold intervention introducing his ongoing artistic research Floral Dramaturgies through the practice of ikebana as a mode of scenographic thinking.

The first opportunity is an introductory ikebana workshop (Shōka style) for beginners. Following a 30-minute historical and methodological introduction to ikebana and its place within Roumagnac’s artistic practice, illustrated through a selection of artistic projects, participants will realise their own floral arrangement. The workshop focuses on floral material at hand, season, gesture, the positioning of bodies and arrangements in space, and the aesthetic principles that shape ikebana as a performative practice. Instead of approaching flower arranging as a decorative craft, participants are invited to encounter ikebana as a practice of attention and embodied dramaturgy.

The second affordance takes the form of an installation at Työhuone (Hakaniemenranta 26), the artist-run space – dedicated to massage, art, and flowers – Roumagnac has co-curated with Finnish choreographer Simo Kellokumpu since 2020. Participants in the Choreographic Convention can choose a parcours which includes an individual 30-minute visits to Tokonoma Series (Festival), a season-specific installation realised in collaboration with two invited artists from the 2026 festival edition. Experienced one-to-one, the installation extends the workshop into an intimate visit centred on slow attention-perception.

These two affordances function as a practicum, or perhaps more precisely, a sensorium, an alternative to the conventional symposium. They propose an embodied reflection on choreo/sceno-graphy through floral assemblage, inviting participants to consider ikebana as a medium for thinking-making-sharing through relations between bodies, materials, environments, time ecology and forms of care.

Vincent Roumagnac is a Basque-French theatre and visual artist, and artistic researcher based in Helsinki. Trained in theatre first as an actor and later as a director, he has, over the past fifteen years, developed a practice across scenography, installation, performance, exhibition-making, and artistic research. Moving away from ‘straight’ ecology of theatre production, his work explores how the stage (as notion and practice) can be “reacclimated” and “re-ecologised” in response to contemporary ecological, technological, and social transformations. Situated within a practice of “discipline fluidity”, Roumagnac has developed the conceptual and artistic operation of ”Redirecting”, not renewing theatre as a discipline, but displacing its operations and rituals towards new constellations in which bodies, objects, flowers, materials, architectures, landscapes, and infrastructures become agents of shared situated scenographic experiences.

Growing up in a family of professional gardeners and florists, floral knowledge has accompanied this trajectory from the outset. After beginning ikebana studies in Tokyo in 2008, Roumagnac gradually integrated floral practice into his artistic practice. Flowers recur throughout projects including Deferred Landscapes (2008–ongoing), Third-Ikebana (2009–ongoing), Reacclimatizations (2018–ongoing), Tokonoma Series (2024–ongoing), Pray You, Love, Remember (2025), and The 444th Season (2026), culminating in the current four-year artistic research project Floral Dramaturgies. In 2023, Roumagnac was invited to Moving in November to install the final artistic part of his postdoctoral artistic research Data Ocean Theatre on the stage of Kiasma Theatre.
