Ola Maciejewska: BOMBYX MORI

Ola Maciejewska:

Bombyx Mori

BOMBYX MORI by Ola Maciejewska is a piece for three dancers, inspired by the work of Loie Fuller (1862-1928). Fuller was one of the first dance artists to speak of movement outside of the body, a movement as a result of interactions between body and things – light, materials, sound. Maciejewska doesn’t replicate the hypnotic swirls of Loie Fuller, but instead explores the relationship between the body and the artifact.

In BOMBYX MORI, the dramaturgical development of intensity in time reveals forms, instant freezes, shape shifts, and outbursts of energized matter, but the work resists a way of reading these as simple reference. The spectator is guided to overcome binary divisions, such as body/object, physical/non-physical, human/nonhuman, rational beings and irresponsible creatures. Like the silk worm, bombyx mori, who literally exists on the verge of binaries, this piece reveals the hybrid nature of things.
